What is Copywriting?
You’re reading this blog because you’re curious about copywriting. Just like you, there was a time when I, too, had no idea what copywriting was. The word sounded as if it had something to do with intellectual property, like patents and trademarks, and copyrighted material such as books, music, images, and things like that. But that word is copyright, R-I-G-H-T. To some, copywriting could also mean copying someone else’s writing. Actually, it’s none of those things! Copywriting is the ability to use written words to persuade someone to take a particular action. Now, that could be to respond to a message that you wrote. It could be to purchase your product. It could be to click on a link or a “buy now” button.
In short, copywriting is closing leads via text. That’s right! It is the ability to persuade, influence, and engage would-be customers. That’s what copywriting is all about. It’s not about writing. It is about closing. Copywriting has a lot to do with closing and selling and very little to do with writing. If it had a lot to do with writing or academic writing, then all the professors, all the teachers, and especially all the English teachers would have been successful copywriters. Well, of course, that’s not the case.
